The history of hats–(In 7-simple steps)
Hats have been around for thousands of years. And they
have had a “significant role” in human history.
So…
Let’s look at a brief overview of the history of hats:
1. Early hats:
The earliest known hats were made of felt and were worn by the
Scythians, a nomadic tribe in Central Asia, around 700 BC.
2. Ancient Egypt:
Hats were also worn by ancient Egyptians, who used them for
protection from the sun. The pharaohs wore tall, cone-shaped
hats called the “Nemes”, while the commoners wore simpler,
brimmed hats.
3. Ancient Greece and Rome:
The Greeks and Romans wore a variety of hats, including
the petasos, a broad-brimmed hat worn by travelers, and
the pilos, a conical hat worn by soldiers.
4. Middle Ages:
In Europe during the Middle Ages, hats were an important part of
dress for both men and women. Knights wore helmets in battle,
while commoners wore hoods and caps.
5. Renaissance:
During the Renaissance, hats became more elaborate and
fashionable. Men wore hats with feathers and women wore
large, elaborate head coverings.
6. 18th and 19th century:
In the 18th and 19th century, hats became even more elaborate
and were worn as a symbol of status and wealth. Men wore top
hats, while women wore bonnets and large hats with feathers
and ribbons.
7. 20th century:
In the early 20th century, hats were still a staple of everyday dress,
but their popularity began to decline in the mid-20th century as
hairstyles changed and people began to wear more casual clothing.
